History

The fund has its roots in a visit to Africa by photographer Christine Button. She was particularly moved by the struggle for education and lack of basic facilities in areas that she visited. On her return, she collected pencils, pens and school stationery, which she was able to send to contacts she had established in Africa.

Friends at Norton Down Methodist Church supported Christine's vision. A photographic presentation of her African Pictures was compiled. A link was established with St Philips & St James Church, Bath, which was already active at Glenburnie Butega School in Uganda (find on Google Maps). Norton Down Africa Fund offered to assist with other projects at the school.

Norton Down Methodist Church continued fund raising for one year. Westfield Ladies Choir donated uniforms and presented concerts. The Thundertones, local group played for our first rock 'n' roll gig. All proceeds helped with projects for Glenburnie School in Uganda. A Board of Trustees was formed and an application was made to the Charity Commission for official registration. Norton Down Africa Fund was officially registered by the Charities Commission on October 19th 2006.
